There are number of successful entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka who have built their businesses in unique fields that are not known much. This is a conversation we had with an owner of Southern House Enterprises. He is Mr. M.W.P.M.N Nanayakkara.

Let’s hear it from himself about his business and his successful journey.

1. Shall we say something about your business first?
Southern House Enterprises was started in 2010. It’s the first Sri Lankan business to manufacture dry mortar under the brand name CEMENTO. Our business is mainly focused on manufacturing tile associated dry mortar.

2. What are the special reasons behind the success of your business?
There are many reasons behind the success of our business as well as making it stand apart from other companies. We only provide very high-quality services and products to our customers. Our tile setters are educated through training sessions and educational seminars we organize. They can answer any questions customers might have. We are equipped with an expertise staff, and we believe that’s what makes us stand out.

3. What are the challenges you had to face during this journey?
I think maintaining a business itself is a challenge. One of the biggest challenges we faced at the beginning was attracting customers and keeping them. How we dealt with that is by identifying our target audience and using marketing campaigns to approach them. To face the challenges successfully we must be updated about the consumer trends and industrial trends of the relevant field.

4. Tell us about the dream you have for your business.
My dream is to take our brand name and business to international market while maintaining a sustainable business structure.

5. What about the support you received from Commercial Bank for your successful journey?
Commercial Bank was the first bank to support us with financial aid since the very beginning. The services provided by Commercial Bank for new entrepreneurs like financial instruments, financial advice is very helpful for a newly started business. The support they provided for our business to come to place we are today, is highly valued.

6. What is your advice for new entrepreneurs?
Keep in mind that your service or the product must have the highest quality in the market. Before you start any business, research about the related market, competitive products, and the resources available to you. Also make time to do a proper business plan including finance management, product/service development and sales.

Once the business is up and running you must regularly be updated about the consumer trends and industrial trends. Building good business connections is also important for the success of a business.
