Tell us how Genuka Builders came into being?
After having completed my Quantity Surveyor Diploma, I joined the Engineering Unit of the Sri Lanka Army. During this time, I also supported my uncle who was engaged in the construction industry. In 2014, I resigned from the Army and started my own construction firm - Genuka Builders.
Our firm started as a C7 registration of ICTAD, and now it has been upgraded to C5 registration ICTAD. Genuka Builders is a popular infrastructure development construction firm among Government institutes. We have managed to complete several construction projects in a shorter period of time.
How does your business differentiate itself in the industry?
The firm's main objective is to complete projects within a minimal period as a cost-effective strategy.
What are some of the challenges you face?
Most of the ongoing Government projects have been at a standstill due to unfavorable economic conditions and new projects are not being considered.
What is the next big thing on your business agenda?
To become the market leader in this line of business by introducing cost-effective modern technology.
How has Commercial Bank helped your business?
At the initial stage the firm was financed by the Commercial Bank, to primarily enter infrastructure development projects. Gradually the firm managed to acquire more projects and complete them before the contracted completion dates.
All stakeholders observed the financial discipline of the firm and this has significantly contributed to our growth. Commercial Bank has been our sole banker since the inception of the business.
And lastly, what advice would you give to a new entrepreneur?
If a firm wants sustainable growth in their industry, financial discipline and quality of work must be a focus right from inception.
