Started just 4 years ago, Morrich Baker (Pvt) Ltd’s signature Baked Rusks have created quite a name for themselves in the market. Their production facility is energy efficient and their products are nutritious and competitively priced to cater to all income groups. Find out more about their business journey here.

Tell us how Morrich Baker (Pvt) Ltd came into being?

Morrich Baker was incorporated under the Sri Lankan Companies Act on 17 December, 2018.

Morrich Baker is a Baked Rusk manufacturing company that delivers high quality Milk Rusk of accepted nutritional content, at affordable price for all socio-economic groups – low-income, middle and upper segments. In addition, we have broad expertise with commercial clients throughout the country.  We have had distributors operating in 15 out of total 25 districts in Sri Lanka within two years of  our commencement of business

How does your business differentiate itself in the industry?

Morrich understands the importance of providing nutritious, tasty, quality and clean products to the consumers is a vital part of being a successful Rusk manufacturer in Sri Lanka. Our Milky Rusk contains fresh milk from diaries in Gal - Oya irrigable area where our plant is located, with no preservatives, while our Whole Wheat Rusk comprises high nutrient value and dietary fibre, with low risk of heart disease and diabetes etc. Our product segments will be expanded to Bread and Cake in forthcoming years. We use technically modified latest versions of machines. The machines are capable of processing and baking our menu efficiently and release the anticipated output in compliance with the nutrition structure applied. Our energy saving policy is to use more natural light in the production facility, best practices to minimise compressed air losses, and gain the heat back from ovens.

What are some of the challenges you face?
Inflation & Pricing: The major challenges we are facing is inflation whereby the prices of raw material, fuel and other commodities are fluctuating highly. Due to this we are struggling to fix a price. As we are more concerned about the consumer, we are not going to make their life further pressured, so we always maintain a standard price to overcome this situation, though we have some financial drop downs in our returns.

Transportation: As we are a developing manufacturer, we are expanding our network island wide but due to the hike in fuel and scarcity in supply of fuel we don’t meet our target on time and this leads to delay in deliveries. Somehow we are trying with third party transportation though it entails more cost.

Scheduled Power Cuts: As we are aware, Sri Lanka is in a situation where it cannot supply continuous power. This has compelled our team to work in limited hours with frequent workforce rotation. Due to this the product is delayed from process to process.

Workforce: Due to the current crisis in Sri Lanka the people are stressed with their daily income so many people are moving out of the country to escape from poverty and this has highly impacted our operation as there is a workforce rotation. Training a new team takes time and impacts efficiency of quality and quantity.

What is the next big thing on your business agenda?

Morrich Baker’s ultimate dream is to become the market leader by fulfilling consumer satisfaction and leap forward to produce their Rusk out of ingredients that improve the human immune system. Such food is highly sought after following the prevailing world pandemic situation. We aim to manufacture a product where all people can buy at any outlet in the local and international market.

How has Commercial Bank helped your business?

Commercial Bank is far above the regular Bankers. They have helped our business by providing financial  support at an affordable rate and provided advisory service on marketing, management and much more, with a friendly approach. I never felt that I am approaching a Bank but rather felt that a friend in need is a friend indeed. Consistently amazing customer service doesn't happen by accident, it happens on purpose.

And lastly, what advice would you give to a new entrepreneur?

Try harder to achieve your dream. Don’t let someone else’s vision of success force you to stray from the path you worked to be on. Carve your own path and you’ll always be heading in the right direction.
