As individuals, we all naturally respond to the urgent and important at the expense of anything relevant but gradual. It is similar to the metaphor of the frog, which, when placed in boiling water, will jump out immediately because of heat. However, if put in normal water heated very slowly, the frog does not perceive the danger and enjoys the warmth. Gradually, as the warmth turns into heat, it becomes disoriented, unable to jump out. Eventually, it boils to death.

We notice and respond to urgent, immediate, and abrupt things because we understand the implications. Unfortunately, we are often not alert enough to notice the gradual, leading to issues.

It’s similar in our day-to-day lives.

  • A small serving of junk food may not feel harmful, but junk food eaten over a long time gradually increases the odds of having a health problem.

  • That odd vanity purchase on your credit card may be fine, but overspending regularly on items beyond your means gradually pushes you into a debt trap.

  • Occasionally, disagreements with your partner are normal, but regular conflicts on every minor issue gradually lead to a point where trust is eroded and the relationship breaks.

  • Are you missing out on important workplace matters by neglecting subtle shifts? Take a moment to reflect and avoid being blindsided by the unexpected.

We notice and respond to urgent, immediate, and abrupt things because we understand the implications. Unfortunately, we are often not alert enough to notice the gradual, leading to issues.

Developing the ability to notice gradual changes is essential. It helps you invest in small, consistent, good habits that will gradually yield future benefits. It also enables you to avoid the pitfalls of small but bad habits that can gradually push you down a path of regret.
